BREAKING BARRIERS
MI
barriers
I would like to tell you a little about myself and why I feel I have a unique perspective on the topics for which I am offering consulting services. I have more than fifteen years of experience working in the disability field. I have had the opportunity to work directly with people with disabilities, educational institutions, agencies and organizations that provide services to those with disabilities, employers, and businesses. But my experience and knowledge of disability issues does not stop with professional experience. I was born with a neuromuscular condition which limits my mobility. I have used some type of mobility assistance all my life, whether it has been leg braces, a manual wheelchair, or an electric scooter. For the past eight years I have had a service dog to assist with difficult tasks. Because of my own life experiences as a person with a disability I perceive things in a different way than most professionals in this field. I get great pleasure from educating others in the hope that I can be a small part in eliminating some of the perceived ideas and stereotypes that exist today towards people with disabilities. I do not believe in lecturing to an audience. I use humor and interaction instead. I have found that keeping a light atmosphere instead of one that is boring or perceived threatening is more conducive to opening people’s minds to new ideas. I look forward to working with you in my mission to break down barriers by building bridges of understanding.
